Ambassador Westphal Ushers in New Season

Chairman BG (Ret) Richard L. McCabe addressed a full audience at the Four Seasons on September 14 for the American Business Group of Riyadh’s first general membership breakfast of the season. The guest speaker, United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Joseph Westphal, was joined by his team, Deputy Chief of Mission Timothy Lenderking and Commercial Counselor Douglas Wallace. Also in attendance was former U.S. Ambassador Ford M. Fraker.

Ambassador Westphal conveyed his sincere appreciation for the members of ABGR as advocates of U.S. business interests in market development, market expansion, and trade policy. The U.S. Embassy views ABGR as a strong partner in advancing U.S. economic and commercial interests in Saudi Arabia. The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States remains steady, including on the commercial, business and trade fronts, in a region filled with tension.

The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States remains steady, including on the commercial, business and trade fronts…
The strength of the relationship between these two countries was reinforced when King Salman visited President Obama in Washington and presented a new economic initiative and strategic partnership aimed at significantly advancing the commercial, business and trade relationship in the future. This recent visit, as Ambassador Westphal remarked, was a success that exceeded expectations. The discussions between King Salman and President Obama emphasized expanding partnerships across various areas including mining, education, commercial retail, healthcare, infrastructure, housing and energy as well as exploring new opportunities. The chief message from the King’s visit was that Saudi Arabia wants an all-encompassing business relationship with the United States.

Moving forward, King Salman and President Obama shared a commitment to transform the bilateral relationship from a short-term focus on trade and contracts to long-term investment, business cooperation, and job creation. The goals of both countries are in alignment as they develop industries that are knowledge- and technology-driven.

Ambassador Westphal conveyed his confidence in the current relationship and pointed to an even stronger future here in the Kingdom. He encouraged ABGR members, as integral players in advancing U.S. policy goals, to share insight and expertise with Embassy staff to improve and expand engagement. He continued by emphasizing his commitment to work with the business community in Saudi Arabia to move the economic relationship to the next level of the new strategic alliance. Ambassador Westphal concluded by highlighting opportunities within Saudi Arabia and the contributions the American business community offers, making the U.S.-Saudi Arabian partnership essential in Saudi Arabia’s development.

Ambassador Westphal then welcomed questions from the audience including two from students of the American International School of Riyadh who were assiting ABGR in the event.
